It took a while to get used to the "creative" way the material is presented, but when I discovered how solid the material is, I decided the creative presentation was OK. The conversational approach "moistened" what might have been dry reading very nicely. I live in a country in Central Africa, and until I looked up the author online, I would have sworn he grew up in the country where I live. His descriptions of institutional and cultural corruption match my experiences and observations perfectly. While the book is written from a distinctly Christian and evangelical perspective, I would recommend it to people who are not Christian, as it does accurately analyse the realities of corruption and its consequences. The conclusion and discussion questions at the end of each chapter make this a great small group study, and the appendix offers many practical suggestions for addressing corruption, and with a little thought and creativity, the ideas that could spin off those suggestions are nearly infinite.Product details

Love the story-telling element to a serious topic.
Robert Osburn’s book is outstanding. I have witnessed and experienced the corrosive effects of corruption in 14 years of non-profit and for-profit work in several Southern Africa countries. This book offers hope and possible solutions.
The book is creative and well written. Osburn is a gifted writer.
I have travelled the world for 35 years. Taming the Beast unpacks what I have observed during my travels is one of the greatest hindrances to the development of societies - corruption. This is a humorous and easily accessible consciousness raiser for those who are numbed by the ubiquitous presence of this cancerous enemy of human flourishing.
This book is an eye-opener that we all need to read and be aware of. It is not just for those countries "over there" but is for our own country, too. As culture degrades, corruption increases, and it is happening here so we need to see and it "bridle" it. Also, I am deeply involved with many people from countries in which corruption is a way of life. It pains me to see their frustration and hopelessness, but now with this book in their hands, I am hopeful that they will be a part of confronting the problem, its roots, and the solution. One of the really great things with this book is that it is not written as an "academic tome" but rather is presented in a very engaging and understandable way. It starts with an interview with a mouse in the office of the anti-corruption minister of a government and then proceeds to various persons or objects that can give testimony to the influence and degradation of corruption. And each chapter has an outline of the main points and then questions for discussion--all very helpful! One person to whom I showed the book read a bit and then exclaimed, "This is written so that I can understand it easily even though English is not my own language." So it is great to read for oneself but also useful in interactions with others from all kinds of backgrounds. Cannot recommend this book highly enough!
This book does an excellent job of explaining the cause and effect of corruption in governments and cultures throughout the world. Dr. Osburn shows how corrupt governments causes expansion of that government and can cause the people under that government to be enslaved into the system of corruption. The opposite of this would be a government that would follow a biblical worldview and allow the people to prosper in producing goods, institutions and services according to Gods plan. Dr. Osburn also explains how a postmodern worldview has replaced a quest for truth with a quest for power. A quest for truth would be following the principles of Gods word a quest for power would be following mans natural instincts which would lead to corruption. He explains that the problem of corruption starts with the corrupt human heart and the only solution to that is through the cross of Christ. The book covers a lot more than can be brought up here. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, it is written in a way that is easy to understand but is very thought provoking.
