The fire leapt into life and immediately flared up in the breeze entering
the channel. Ben scurried around lighting the other trays. It was a frightening sight. The flames leapt up eight or ten feet, the masts and deck had already been given a dousing of water, but even so there was fear in the hearts of every man aboard. Searing heat burnt their faces; Matthew stemmed the rising panic that threatened to overwhelm him. It was a bit too life-like for comfort.
They were in the channel and the frigates edged into view as the corvette rounded the rocky cliff face, they looked threatening and under normal circumstances would have been the cause of great concern; but they were paid little heed, for the crew’s immediate concern was avoiding being burned to death. They almost fought for the buckets of water throwing the contents over the masts and galleries the varnish blistering in the heat, quickly they refilled the buckets dropping them over the side and hauling them back in by the short length of rope spliced to every handle. Time and again they filled their buckets almost in a state of panic. What was intended to be a show put on for the benefit of the Captains of the frigates turned out to be a race to stop the ship from becoming their funeral pyre.

These are good storied, however the author either has limited historical knowledge of the period or doesn't care. He flops between events that were 25-30 years apart like they happened the day before! It really doesn't take away from the story line, but it is annoying.
Agree with some of the negative reviews, who ever edited must have been inebriated. Still, wouldn't miss this series for anything. Love the stories and the characters. Carry on, Mr Adams!
Very disappointed that a lengthy section from book 8 has been " copied into book 9.
One can forgive ( to some extent ) repetition of some aspects within each book but if one is reading the full series it becomes tiresome. One almost gets the impression that padding is being provided.
This is a wonderful series, I can't stop reading through the adventures.
Something must have happened during the writing of this book, however. Large portions of some of the chapters are exact duplicates of previous works. That's disappointing. Proofreading was lacking in places, as well. I'm hoping we are back to high quality work in book 10
GLYN Adams` books only get better with the second reading. I am strongly recommending for you to reread all these books again to get best picture that he has to offer. If you haven't read any of Glyn's books you are really missing out!

There is not a lot to say, this is trash, as an avid reader of this type of novel I find it insulting when an author cannot even get the terminology right, "Gun doors" give me a break.
With the characters in this series the rest of the RN should have been able to pack up and go home.
To top it off there is a lot of cutting and pasting between the "First Officer and Renaissance and Revenge". Whole Paragraphs are repeated word for word.
No more for me.
After great character development in the earlier books in the series, the books are now just Jame Morgan and nothing of Mathew Morgan. The stories are getting ridiculous and not as good. Sailor's getting promoted straight to Captain, etc. Capturing every ship in the French Navy. I will keep reading since I love naval series in hope it gets back to the main characters and a little more realistic. I understand this is fiction. Many, Many typos.
I don't like to do negative reviews but this is a negative one. The plots of books one (Face the Enemy ) tHru book nine ( Renaisance and Revenge ) leave much to be desired. Especially at a cost of $8.00 per book. The author fills each following book repeating pages from the book before, and by the time you read the last book it seems to be a continual repeat of what has gone before. The plot is fiction for sure as it isn't based on any fact I am aware of. The series is a far cry from series like A. Kent, D. Lambdin, D. Pope, J. Stockwin, M. Aye, B. Withecombe, et al. Also to note there are many misstated characters, missing words. I feel that I waisted my time and my money.
